Minister Stefan Wallin, Ministry of Environmental Affairs of Finland-made a fine decision- teki hyvän päätöksen-gjorde det bästa beslutet!

Finally, the decision is made. The new Oil Disaster Prevention and Teaching Center is to be built in Porvoo!
It will be built on the same bay as Neste Oil refinery is located, so we will have all these users and preventive operations very close together.

This is absolutely the best possible solution.

We must now hope that the decision leads to rapid action and that the new center will be a learning and teaching center of high quality as well as a center for storage of booms and other equipment in such large quantities that we can actually get help at a level needed when lets say 100000 tons of crude gets into the waters. See below.

I congratulate minister Wallin for this excellent decision!

100 000 tons crude in the Gulf of Finland, almost, very very near...

Enlarge by pressing on pic.

M/T Propontis has gone on rocks just west of Hogland. Fortunately it has duble bottoms so even if there is some large sips in the outer hull, the inner is intact and no oil has been leaking into the waters.

This is pure luck...what if?
100 000 tons of crude during winter time in the Gulf of Finland, with coming SW winds, all or most of this oil would end up on th south shores of Finland. Among all the 1000 islands. The task to clean it up would be tremendous and it would probably take some 50 or more years to clean this mess.
What is the possibilities to prevent this oil from spreading or to collect it before it reaches the shores: 0%. There is no systems or materials to take care of this large an oil spill in these waters, ever.

( M/T Propontis on valmistunut vuonna 2006, ja sillä on 25 hengen miehistö. Alus on 249 metriä pitkä, ja sillä on lastina 100 000 tonnia raakaöljyä. )
Now one comes to think about it... this ship is built in 2006, crew of 25, 249 meters long, 100000 tons of crude , it must have all the modern equipment and cadgets for navigation... how was this possible to happen? It just should not be possible, but it did. Very strange. The news state that it was a navigational error!? How come???

This almost disaster happened just on the east side of my predicted disaster zone. See picture.

The boat is being towed towards our large oil terminal and oil refining plant in Skiöldvik-Porvoo. Lets hope no more problems will happen.

Finnish National news 9-10 February 2007: Minister Stefan Wallin of the Ministry of Environmental Affairs has decided that the Oil Disaster Prevention Center is to be built in Porvoo. This is absolutely good news. Porvoo is closest to all these oil problem areas where th problems have happened during the last years. More about this later. LINK press here.

Should we now do something?

It is starting again....the second almost disaster in 2007 in the Baltic...m/s Weserstern did it again!

Here we go again: m/s Weserstern with 10 000 ton of diesel oil lying on ground outside Tallinn, Estonia. Same ship run ashore in Porvoo ( causing a big alarm with potential explosion risk for the whole oilterminal ) last year see below... what is this ship going to do before we have all the oil on our shores?

Aluksessa on 10 000 tonnia dieselöljyä.

Sama tankkeri ajoi viime vuoden huhtikuussa rantapenkkaan Porvoossa. Tuolloin jäätilanne yllätti luotsin ja miehistön. Vuonna 2002 alus törmäsi Itämerellä jääolosuhteissa laituriin.

Suurin osa miehistöstä on filippiiniläisiä. Alus purjehtii Man-saaren lipun alla.

So we are in the square again. South-East corner a oil carrying ship in deep trouble.

The even had a pilot onboard, but something happened? Wind? Else? Big trouble was

just there in the middle of an icecold sea. Could it have been avoided? How?

Should someone do something?

Norway: there are many birds dying, nothing is done about that!? Could we and should we?

Bergens Tidende, btno:

Now about this and the future: Are we not really responsible for this kind of disasters and is it not our responsibility to:

1. prevent them from happening, ie having proper ships and captains? Having laws that gives penalties so high they really matter! The one who makes /creates the disaster should pay 100% for cleanup, everytime, even if it means going out of business!

2. If we fail and the disaster still happens, then we must have the best possible equipment to clean up the mess we have created? I believe our responsibility is there and we should do everything we can no matter what the cost is.

We should really do something, now.

No se valo sammui putkesta sitten syksyn aikana...Light is turned off in pipe!

No eipä siitä sitten sen enempää. Tulevaisuudessa linnut saavat öljyyntyessään kuolla ihan niinkuin aina ennenkin ei niistä oikeastaan kukaan välitä ( onko kukaan välittänyt ennenkään, vaan todennet tapahtuneen kts edellinen juttu Tallinnan edustalta ). Tuskin muustakaan luonnosta.

The whole bird hospital project is out and apparently will not be made in Finland. Some government and local rescue workers have done all there can be to dishonor the inventor and try to use his invention on their own to make the hospital without him. Real nice people, yes? There will of course be no payment for him either for his work! ( How can some people do these things? No morale, no nothing? )
So the inventor is out, hospital price most likely goes up way over the estimated budget... so there will be no hospital to clean the animals, in Finland anyway. No one seems to care, not now nor in the future. Have anyone really cared ever for birds and other animals wellfare? Show me how if anyone has ever cared!

One must say: shit happens, but why always so that it hits those without defense? and who cannot speak for themselves?

This is so depressing. That was why there was no blog entries during the autumn I just got 100% fed up with our authorities.

Maybe I must start writing again.

If there would be one transferable unit now available, it could easily be moved to Norway to take care of some of the many 1000 dying birds in their large oil disaster on the coast.
We could at least save some of the birds, that is better than doing nothing. It is our duty because we are the ones spilling the bloody oil, because of greed and bad ships!

Someone should do something!
